School refusal - Two case studies

(click to download)

In this case study two cases of young people who refuse school for a longer or shorter time are described. Both seem to have originated from and maintained by contextual factors (parents, school). In one case the student returns to school by means of the interventions of NVR, in the other case the effect is recovery of the relationship between parent and child, while schooling is not yet feasible.
The underlying question in this case-study is that of the potential effectiveness of described NVR-interventions in case of school refusal. The cases show that a good cooperation between parents and school as well as a rapid approach at the start of school refusal affects the possibility of return to school. The disillusionment of control is a basic requirement for parents to take a stand against school refusal, in which support groups play an important role.
Schools often think that individual treatment is necessary prior to returning to school. Thereby important contextual factors that influences the success of returning to school are overlooked. It is therefore advisable to inform schools about this constantly. It is interesting to investigate whether, in the context of better cooperation between education and care, an education care package for this group of students is achievable.

This led into a new constructive co- operation within the team.
