Teacher's alliance

The isolation of the teacher is not only a fact but a state of mind. As a result of their persistent isolation teachers are thrust into a professional culture of constant comparison and hiding difficulties. Withdrawal becomes a survival strategy: "I come to the classroom and do my job. As long as nobody meddles in my business and bothers me during recess!" That attitude is understandable considering teachers' long experience with criticism and demands that are not backed by support. That is why many teachers react suspiciously to any attempt to interfere with their work, redefine their jobs or eat away at the few quiet moments they have in the teachers' lounge. But the culture of isolation is highly damaging for teachers, impeding any possibility of improving their status and functioning. Against this background we were happy to find that most teachers welcome a program aimed at easing their isolation and restoring their authority.
